How to Choose a WordPress Developer in Kerala
By Manu Mathew, Technical Lead Engineer · Last updated 12 October 2026
You need a website for your shop, clinic or small firm, and a search for a WordPress developer in Kerala gives you a long list of names. They all say they build fast, modern sites. How do you tell which one will suit you?
The good news is that you don’t need to be technical to choose well. A few plain questions, a look at real work and clear answers about ownership will tell you most of what you need to know.
Quick answer
To choose a WordPress developer in Kerala, start with your own goals, then look at live sites they have built and ask how they work. Check who will own the domain, hosting and admin accounts, what happens after launch, and whether the quote lists the work clearly. Choose the person whose answers are clear, not just the cheapest.
What should you decide before contacting a developer?
Decide what the website must do for your business. A clear goal makes every developer’s answer easier to compare.
Write a few lines covering:
- The main job of the site. Enquiries, bookings, online sales, or simply looking credible when people search for you.
- Who it’s for. Local customers in Kozhikode or Kochi, visitors from other states, or buyers overseas.
- Languages. English only, or Malayalam pages too.
- What you already have. A logo, photos, text, an old site, a domain name.
- What you can keep up yourself. Will you add news, products or offers, or should the site rarely change?
You don’t need a full specification. One page of notes is enough to start a useful conversation.
What should you look for in a WordPress developer’s past work?
Look at live websites, not just screenshots, and check them on your phone. A site that works well on mobile tells you more than a polished portfolio page.
When you open a site they built, check a few simple things:
- Does it load reasonably quickly on your phone’s mobile data?
- Is it easy to find the phone number, address and contact form?
- Do the forms work? Ask whether the owner actually receives the enquiries.
- Is it kept up to date? An old copyright year or broken pages can be a sign nobody looks after it.
If they can, ask to speak to a past client. Google’s Core Web Vitals guide on web.dev explains the speed measures developers use, if you want to go a little deeper.
Which questions should you ask a WordPress developer?
Ask questions about how they work, not only what they can build. The answers show how the project will feel from your side.
- How will you understand my business before you start?
- Who will do the work? The person you speak to, or someone else?
- Will you use a ready-made theme, a page builder or custom code, and why?
- Which plugins do you expect to use? Fewer, well-maintained plugins are usually easier to look after.
- How will I review the site before it goes live? Ask whether there is a staging copy, a private version you can check first.
- What do you do about security, backups and updates?
- How will we stay in touch, and in which language?
- What happens if something breaks after launch?
A good developer will be happy to explain these in plain words. If the answers are vague, ask again.
Who should own your domain, hosting and WordPress accounts?
You should. The domain, hosting and main WordPress administrator account should be in your name, with the developer given their own access.

| Account | Who should own it | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name | You, with your email address | Losing it means losing your web address |
| Hosting | You, billed to your business | You can move host or developer freely |
| WordPress admin | You, plus a separate login for the developer | You can remove their access later |
| Paid themes and plugins | You, where licences allow | Updates keep working if you part ways |
This isn’t about distrust. It simply means you are never stuck if a developer moves on, which happens to everyone eventually.
How do you compare quotes from WordPress developers?
Compare what each quote includes, not just the total. Two quotes can look very different because they describe different work.
Check whether each quote covers:
- Number of pages and who writes the text.
- Design approach, such as a ready-made theme or a custom design.
- Extra features, like bookings, payments or a Malayalam version.
- Hosting and domain, and who pays for them each year.
- Launch tasks, such as basic SEO settings, analytics and a backup set-up.
- Support after launch, and what it covers.
If something you need is missing, ask for it to be added in writing. A clear quote prevents most disagreements later.
Should you choose a local developer or work remotely?
Either can work well. What matters more is clear communication and a shared way of tracking the work.
A developer in your own district can meet you in person, which some owners find reassuring. Many projects, though, run smoothly over video calls, shared documents and email, wherever the developer is. If you prefer, ask for a short first call in Malayalam or English so you can judge how easily you understand each other.
How do I work with a new client?
I start by listening, then put the plan in writing before any work begins. That way the owner knows what to expect at each step.
My usual steps are:
- A first conversation, online or in person in Kozhikode, about the business and what the site must do.
- A written plan: pages, features, the trade-offs I see and what I’ll need from the owner.
- Accounts in the owner’s name from day one, with separate access for me.
- A private preview to review before anything goes live.
- A handover with simple notes on updates, backups and who to call.
I mostly meet clients online, but I’m happy to meet in Kozhikode when it helps.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a WordPress developer in Kerala charge?
It depends on the work: the number of pages, the features, who writes the content and the support you need afterwards. A simple brochure site and an online shop are very different projects. Share your notes with two or three developers and compare what each quote actually includes.
Is a freelancer or an agency better for a small business site?
Both can do good work. A freelancer often means you talk directly to the person building the site, while an agency may offer a wider team. Choose based on clear communication, relevant past work and who will look after the site once it is live.
How long does it take to build a WordPress website?
It depends on how big the site is and how quickly content and feedback are ready. Content is often the slowest part, so having text and photos prepared early helps. Ask each developer for a timeline with clear review points rather than a single end date.
Can I update the website myself after it’s built?
Usually, yes. WordPress lets you edit pages, add posts and change images without writing code. Ask your developer to show you how, and to give you an account with the right level of access so you can make everyday changes safely.
What should I do if my current developer is no longer available?
First make sure you can still sign in to your domain, hosting and WordPress admin. If you can’t, contact your domain registrar and host with proof of ownership. Once you have access again, a new developer can review the site and take over its care.
